One Line Marketing Wisdom

It’s amazing how much insight and information can be packed into one line. So I emailed the bloggers I read, and asked them to submit one line about marketing. The following are the responses I received (in the order received with mine last). I encourage you to add your own One Line Marketing Wisdom to the post.

Seth Godin
“Tell a story, keep your promises, surprise me.”

Susan Gunelius of Brandcurve
“Your product or service is far less important than its ability to fulfill your customers’ needs.”

Travis of Young Go Getter
“Strategy without execution is a document. Execution without strategy is art.”

Muhammed Saleem of Pronet Advertising
“Use social media, don’t abuse social media.”

Andrew Barbaccia of A Young Entrepreneurs Blog
“Marketing is selling opportunities to those not informed enough to seek them on their own.”

Sean Moffitt of Buzz Canuck
“Marketing is for lovers - everybody may think they can do it well, but it’s only the passionate, edgy and open that make it worthwhile.”

Ian of Conversation Marketing
“Use the whole internet. Online marketing doesn’t stop at your web site.”

John of Marketing-Works!
“Marketing failures can be more valuable that the successes assuming you learn the lesson for next time.”

Galba Bright of Tune Up Your EQ
“A marketing vision without passion is merely a dream.”

Drew McLellan of Drew’s Marketing Minute
“Make the investment to clearly understand and articulate your brand promise (both internally and externally) and then behave from that place 100% of the time.”

Guy Kawasaki
“Never ask people to do something you wouldn’t do.”

Matt J McDonald of A New Marketing
“Forget everything else - marketing is about making a connection.”

  • Fantastic wisdom here! Thanks for introducing me to a few great bloggers I have not yet read.
  • very great, thanks u
  • "John of Marketing-Works!" - thats intresting
  • thanx for your article.. it was really helpful to me.. all the marketing ideas are cool..
  • I have heard it said all in the numbers, which is somewhat true. You will go through alot less numbers and more sales if you are targetting the right group. Search Engine Reviews mentor your people right and their success will be yours
  • Hello Matt:

Just stopped by in passing. It's great to see that your list has got bigger and bigger. Well done :). I tip my hat also to you because your idea inspired me to put together the Essence of EQ presentation and series.
  • Best marketing makes itself useless.
  • Effective marketing sets the table where the selling conversation meal is enjoyed!
  • I'd just like to take a minute to thank everyone who added their One Line Marketing Wisdom. This post turned out to be more of a success than I could have imagined, and it's all because of all the great participation. The way things are going, I'm on my way to a follow up post where I'll put all the ones from the comments and maybe some more if I can get them. Thanks again.

    Matt
  • My one line:

Challenge your own assumptions, tune out and put yourself in your customer's shoes.
  • Focus your marketing plan on wooing the customer.
  • I'll go you one better - how about one WORD?

    Here's my candidate: Unique
  • If your market defined it for you, I think it would be short and simple: Move me.
  • Love the list - here's my contribution:

If your new product, new service, new book, new blog post, new whatever can’t make someone respond with “Holy Crap!,” then don’t expect big things out of it.
  • Underpromise, overdeliver: buzz and sales will follow.
  • Fantastic wisdom here! Thanks for introducing me to a few great bloggers I have not yet read.
  • Thank you for including me in this post, Matt. You've put together a great list of marketing wisdom! I posted about it at Brandcurve today, so hopefully, more readers will stop by here to learn and add to the list.

  • Almost forgot, Sean, you're more than welcome to get in touch with me, travis (at) younggogetter (dot) com.

    Thanks for the kind words.
  • Thanks for including me in this Matt. You've got a great collection there. Congrats on getting some of the big boys on board.
  • I ain't no marketer, but here is my contribution. ;)

Rightly or wrongly, people like their lives to be narrated. Marketing provides that narration and puts products into people's lives.
  • Editors don't give PR because they generally care about your company but instead because you were one of the few who provided them the foundation for a larger, more interesting story.
  • This is a sweet idea. I hope that you get more lines of wisdom.
    John
  • Matt,

Love the simplicity, love the succinctness, love the marquee value of your respondents, love the inght - who is this Travis, Young Go Getter, love his one-liner- I'm going to connect with him now.

    Cheers. Sean
