Pownce

Subscribe to the RSS feed?Oh heck yes. Well played sir/ma'am, well played.

Part of being a good New Marketer is seeing around the corner. That means getting on trends, technology, and cool new stuff early. I’ve been invited to the Pownce (a “twitter-killer” from Kevin Rose of Digg among others) and I have a handful of invitations to pass along. If you’d like an invite, email me and let me know. Sorry, I don’t have any more at the moment. I’ll let you know when I get more.

Tools Of The Trade

Ryan Howard doesn’t head to the plate with a whiffle ball bat. Dale Earnhardt Jr. doesn’t drive a 1989 Toyota Camry. Stephen Spielberg doesn’t make his movies with a HI-8 camcorder.

So why are you still using a free domain name?

If you’re serious about what you’re doing, then make sure you do it right. A www._______.com/yourdomain screams “I don’t care enough about my buisness/blog/image to spend six dollars on my own domain!”

If your website is a conversation (and it should be), then your domain name is part of your introduction. So be careful, because you know what they say about first impressions…

8 from the ProBlogger Group Writing Contest

Well the contest has come and gone and I can honestly say it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever participated in. Close to 900 bloggers sent in their own top 5 lists and they were all posted on ProBlogger. I took some (read: a lot) of time looking through all the submissions and decided to share these 8 with you. Not only are they relevant to this blog, but they’re also good posts with a high degree of writing quality. Look for more in the near future.

Best of The Next

SEOmoz has put together an amazing little project entitled “Web 2.0 Awards”. They have gone through and picked out the very best in a wide range of Web 2.0 sites and arranged them by category. If you’re an internet buff, a marketing guru or just someone who is interested in the next big thing, do yourself a favor and check it out:

SEOmoz Web 2.0 Awards

Surf around as many of the sites as you can. I’m sure there’s a ton of room to create great marketing ideas using these sites as tools.

The only constant

You guessed it: change.

As the old adage goes: “If you want something you’ve never had, you have to be willing to do things you’ve never done.”

Nowhere is this more true than marketing.

If you want a web 2.0 presence then you better create a community friendly site that promotes interaction. If you want to give your CEO a voice, then sign him up for a wordpress blog. If you want to try and capture a new audience, then you can’t be shy about doing things that they will be receptive to. The marketing world is full of new opportunity right now, and as another old saying goes: “Fortune favors the bold”

No excuses

There is absolutely no excuse not to have a web page.

I’m not saying that everyone should go out and rent a dedicated server, hire a web development team and spend thousands of dollars developing a highly intricate site, but you at least need an online presence.

This idea has been mentioned before by Ian at Conversation Marketing and Seth Godin on his blog and both of these guys are dead on.

There are no more excuses.

Price isn’t a factor anymore. This domain name cost me $6 and my web hosting is $5 a month. Wordpress, along with other blogging platforms are free. There’s no web development costs.

Expertise isn’t a factor anymore. Using templates you can create a fully functional page in Wordpress in under an hour. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece or a beacon of technology as long as it’s you.

Stop wasting time. Go get some space now and make a page. Feature information about you or your business. Make it easy to get in contact with you. The internet is a powerful interaction tool. Let it work for you.
